Respiratory contaminants can be divided into two basic groups: particles and gases. How you protect yourself depends on which type of hazard it is.

Particles are very tiny pieces of matter. If the particle is dry it is called a dust. If the particle is liquid it is a mist. And if the particle is created by burning material it is known as a fume. Breathing in these particles can clog and irritate you respiratory system.

Gases are substances that have no identifiable shape or form. They cannot be seen and you may not be able to smell them. Some liquids, when heated, become gases known as vapor. Gases and vapors can be dangerous when breathed, they can damage not only your respiratory system, but other organs as well.
